Reckless Conservative cuts put our national parks at risk

Many Canadians experience our country's beautiful natural spaces through our national parks

Conservative budget cuts are threatening the future of our national parks and historic sites, according to New Democrats.

A report by the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society (CPAWS) revealed alarming service cuts at Canada’s National Parks, with over 600 positions being cut by the Conservative government. 

“These cuts mean fewer scientists and technicians helping to protect our parks and monitoring their ecological health. It’s a huge concern for many Canadians who care about our National Parks,” said New Democrat Environment Critic Megan Leslie. “These parks are national treasures and are appreciated by all Canadians. They help us remember our history and allow people to experience our country’s natural beauty.”

The Conservatives’ decision will lead to shorter seasons and more restricted access to our national parks and historic sites.

“Conservatives claim to care about our economy, and yet are ramming through cuts that will adversely affect local economies. The tourism industry in particular will be seriously harmed by these short-sighted cuts,” said Parkdale-High Park MP Peggy Nash.

The CPAWS report also outlines concerns about the development of oil projects close to national parks, activities which could seriously impact their ecological health.

New Democrats are demanding the government reverse these cuts and commit to protecting our national parks. These sites are important tourist attractions and an important part of our heritage – we believe they should be preserved for future generations.
